#045 How does change affect the creative process?
We are the masters of our practice; we carry our learnings with us through every version of ourselves.
(01) REFLECT
As creatives, we often rely on the walls we’ve built around our practice to form a solid foundation for our process. In the last few months, I've undergone a number of shifts, both large and small. While some of these changes have been for the best, others have left me feeling frustrated and anxious. Before I moved, I had a safe place to exercise my creativity — between those four walls, anything was possible, and I often wondered the effect it would have on my process if those walls ever crumbled.
Change has always been a two-edged sword. To open a new door, you must first close another. In an ideal situation, we’d have a keyholder with all the keys to the doors closed in case we ever wanted to open them again. But instead, life only offers one chance at a time. A chance to experience discomfort, break old patterns, and give birth to something entirely new. However, we tend to attribute our progress to the specific space we’re in. This is why, in some cases, change is perceived negatively; we believe that once we don’t have access to the walls that granted us the opportunity to expand our understanding, we’re removed from the clarity that we gained in the process.
6 months later, I realize that I can always build new walls. We are the masters of our practice; we carry our learnings with us through every version of ourselves. Sometimes we get the privilege of choosing the changes we’d like to make in our lives, such as being outside more or building new relationships. Those are conscious choices we make to challenge ourselves to be better creatives. In other cases, though, life throws unexpected curveballs, such as getting laid off, moving, losing a family member, breaking up with your partner, or facing health issues. All of a sudden, the walls crumble without any clear explanation as to why, but despite how we might feel in the moment, we still retain our autonomy.
At the end of the day, our process is simply what we make of it. It is okay to embrace those moments of defeat, but eventually, we can choose to reach into the toolbox we’ve created with each new wall we've built. When a shift occurs, the opportunity isn’t the mental or physical space we’re in, but what we acquire as a result.
